Sometimes you run out of ideas on what you can do during a short weekend to be cool, nice and different. You kinda know all the parks in the city, don’t feel like going to the movies or anything like that. So what else is there for fun? Well, “Hammocks at high altitude” is a very strong candidate for the perfect summer activity in Romania.
How to plan this activity
As I said above, at the time of writing, the activity is organized on Sunday only, at Baia de Fier, near Pestera Muierilor. There are ~12 available hammocks and 3 time slots per day so in order to get one, you should book this experience a few weeks in advance. I went for the first available time slot, which was 9:00 in the morning.
I left Bucharest at 5:00 in the morning and reached the destination at 8:30-8:45 with a small stop on the way, just in time for the experience. We got equiped with everything we needed in terms of safety and all I had to bring was some water, my camera and a backpack to carry all that 🙂 as everything in this tour is guided.
From the starting point (a house literally near Pestera Muierilor), you have to do a small 15 minutes via ferrata, but not something too complex or scary. Nice experience however. While finishing the via ferrata, you will have to cross a rope on the other side of the mountain, literally stepping on a simple rope. You are secured all the time and everything takes 1 minute probably so nothing too scary. You’re on the other side of the mountain and now you will be “transported” to your hammock. The organizers will take everybody one by one with a swing to one of the hammocks, while you will have to put yourself into the hammock and decouple the swing. At that point, you have 1-1.5 hours to stay in the hammock, enjoy the view, take a short nap and enjoy this great experience. Nice and simple!
